Human doings

I like to keep busy, I'm not good at just sitting still and have always struggled with meditation within my yoga practice. I feel like i'm wasting time 'doing nothing' - and this is where the paradox lies. 'Doing nothing' is still 'doing' .... the activity just so happens to be nothing and that is ok. We are, after all, human beings and not humans doings, so to find stillness in our lives is integral for our well being - to just be.

If your like me and struggle to accept stillness then here is my top tip to help with that. Incorporate it into an activity that you enjoy. For me it's paddle boarding, I take myself out onto the water, sit on my board, and am still for how ever long feels right. I am away from day to day noise, and feel a sense of accomplishment having incorporated it into a hobby I love. This can be relayed into all sorts of activities - if you enjoy hiking find your stillness up the top of a mountain you have climbed, if you enjoy art take 10 minutes in between painting to be still, the list could go on an on. It's a time to clear the mind and take a break, refuel, and recharge.

If, like me, you have an overly active mind it can lead to unnecessary thoughts - we are not our thoughts, we make a choice to act on our thoughts or not. This place of stillness helps me to take time away from my thoughts, and I often find, when I return back to consciousness many of those thoughts have disappeared, so they couldn't have been that import after all ...
